Camping at Green Leaf

On our way to our Bradley Birth class last Tuesday, Aaron mentioned that we hadn't gotten to go camping since we've been married. I told him we could go that coming weekend - we really didn't have anything planned, plus it was our last free weekend before the big move. We both casually brushed off the idea as something that would be fun, but probably not realistic. Until...

We were talking to our (first!) Tulsa friends, Chris and Beka, after class. Chris is a third year med student, and Beka is a spanish teacher at a prep school here in Tulsa. Med school alone keeps them incredibly busy. We had been trying to find time to have a double date, and the plan was to do something Friday night. The first thing Beka said to us after class was, "Do you guys like camping?" I laughed out loud. I couldn't help myself! And there we have God moment #49,586 since moving to Tulsa.

Over the next few days, we planned the trip via facebook and phone calls. They were in charge of supper Friday night (Hobo dinners - a bunch of good stuff put in aluminum foil and cooked over the fire). We were responsible for breakfast Saturday morning (eggs, bacon, and potato packets - the classic camping breakfast). Together we split Saturday lunch (turkey sandwiches, apples, and cheez-itz).

It was quite the challenge coming up with adequate camping supplies. Those types of supplies are just things that are aquired over time, you know? Even though we didn't have a whole lot of stuff, it made the adventure that much more fun, and even better - it made for less packing and clean up!

Green Leaf: the State Park we camped at about an hour from Tulsa. It was absolutely gorgeous!

It took me a while to get used to the idea of BUYING firewood. Ridiculous. But, you do what you have to do when it's not your own land to cut down trees from. If we would've gotten there a little bit earlier than we did, finding enough firewood on the ground would have been easy. Since we got there right as the sun was setting, we decided setting up the tents was a bigger priority. Another thing that's hard for me to wrap my mind around: buying ice. These simple things that I took for granted growing up in Valentine!

Anyway, Friday night, we made supper, smores, and basically just hung out around the campfire.

We woke up to a fleet of trucks in the camping spot next to us. They were a bunch of guys camping out together from a church group. Saturday afternoon, right before we left, they invited Aaron and Chris to play Ultimate Frisbee with them. I love watching Aaron play frisbee...in fact, at one point in the game, one of the church group guys commented about Aaron's wicked skills, "Looks like we've got Brett Farve playing with us." I was 1) proud of my husband for playing like a pro and 2) proud of myself for knowing who Brett Farve was.

My husband, being the brillant man that he is, suggested bringing the air mattress. I protested, "But that's not real camping!" In the end, we brought the air mattress and, boy, was Aaron right! It would have been a rough night without it. It was very chilly; there was frost on the grass when we woke up. But we made a cozy nest and had Baby as a furnance, so we kept pretty warm all night.

Can you tell I just woke up?

The men starting the campfire in the morning.

Late Saturday morning, we went for a little hike. There are some pretty intense trails throughout the park. We wanted to make it to the swinging bridge, but it was about a 5 mile trip. We got, maybe, a mile into it and realized with two pregnant ladies, it probably wasn't going to happen. It was a fun, beautiful hike, nonetheless!

Stopping for pictures along the way...

The girls and our bellies!

The guys being tough.

We found a playground on our way back from checking out the marina. Aaron wanted me to push him on the tire swing. It's hard to do with a belly.

The whole gang.
